Skills for Logistics – Employer Survey
Wavehill was commissioned to undertake a business survey of 4,500 logistics employers across the UK, in order to determine the training and staff development arrangements across the spectrum of transport companies, warehouses, logistics hubs, ports, cargo docks, freight companies and many others.
The survey was used to identify key drivers and barriers to the take-up of training, and to explore the relationship between economic conditions, statutory training, discretionary training, and if training delivers efficiency and profitability gains.
The method used analysed trends by UK nation and Government RDA region and included significant support with weighting and data analysis for the Skills For Logistics team.

Dolgarrog
Ainscough Johnston is a major UK land and property developer, and it is currently leading the regeneration of the 40-acre former Dolgarrog Aluminium factory in the Conwy valley in Wales. Ainscough Johnston will shortly commence a major multi-million pound investment programme to form the centre of a revitalised and regenerated village.
The first stage was to commission Wavehill to develop an extensive Consultation Strategy to get the views of local people, businesses and other influencers. The method devised by Wavehill specifically for the Dolgarrog development included consultation with the Welsh Assembly Government and Conwy County Borough Council, a survey of local businesses and consultation with the local community via a household survey.
Our approach included training community members themselves to play a leading role in the consultation process; an approach championed by Wavehill.

SAVY
SAVY is an ESF funded project that works with disadvantaged young people mainly between the ages of 16-25 in Torfaen, Wales using a range of innovative methods to help them develop skills and gain qualifications and to ready them for further learning, training and hopefully employment.
The aim of Wavehill’s evaluation is to establish how the project has had a positive impact, not only on the young people it supports but also on the service delivery, and partnership working. In line with the latest innovative evaluation methods the approach being used by Wavehill includes training a number of young people (all of whom are from the project) as ‘peer evaluators’ to undertake a survey of other young people who have benefited from the project.

University of Central Lancashire
UCLan is linking its student graduates into the local economy by placing graduates into short term projects with local small businesses. The ERDF funded Knowledge Transfer Service at the UCLan brings contemporary skills and learning out from academia into local businesses. The businesses benefit because they import new thinking and the graduates benefit because they get some experience of the workplace.
There are three separate initiatives;
UNITE is a regional initiative providing support to small to medium enterprises (SMEs) through the use of free short term, four week, student and graduate placements.
Northern Lights is a comprehensive business support programme designed for people who are thinking about starting a business.
Media Revenue element of the programme is focused on established SMEs.
The lifespan of the projects has been 2 years and they have a collective value of £5.8million to the University.
Wavehill’s evaluation methodology includes:
- Strategic level interviews with key decision makers;
- Interviews with the project delivery team;
- A telephone survey of participating students and SME’s;
- Focus groups with a sample of students and businesses.
The evaluation will inform the future strategy of the University’s Knowledge Transfer Service and also guide further bids for European Funding which are currently under development.

Caerphilly Communities Project
Wavehill Consulting was commissioned to undertake a programme of ‘Visioning Research for Deprived Caerphilly Communities’. This work involved reviewing the work of the local authority’s regeneration partnerships operating in its most deprived wards, and conducting a large-scale resident’s survey to gauge the perception of positive change in communities.
The measures for gauging change were all aligned with the borough’s Community Strategy and with national indicators of community cohesion, safety and quality of life. This meant that the work of the partnerships could be viewed both in its strategic context, but also that is added value could be accurately determined.
The outcome of the research was that the council could invest in new interventions in the most deprived areas around Caerphilly with the confidence that their work was being valued by residents and was delivering good value for money.
