Food & Drink Multiplier Project – Privacy Notice

How we hold and process your information

Wavehill have been appointed by BIC Innovation to undertake a research study into the multiplier benefit of investment into the food and drink sector in Wales. The key task of the research is to measure the scale of the food and drink sector supply chain in Wales and the impact of any investment made by organisations in the sector.

To undertake this research, Wavehill are interested in mapping the supply chain of different food and drink sector organisations in Wales to explore how income and expenditure flows throughout the local economy and any leakage into the rest of the UK or overseas.

The data you provide will only be used for the purposes of this research. Any personal or commercial information collected as part of the research is kept confidential. The information will not be made public in a way that could lead to your organisation or suppliers being identified. The information will be anonymised and all figures aggregated alongside other participants in the research to show average proportions across all participant businesses. Wavehill will produce a report that draws on the analysis of this insight but none of the original information will be shared and the report will not identify any individuals or organisations.

It is also important to note that the team undertaking the evaluation do not work for BIC Innovation or any of the organisations that are involved in the SSU Cluster or public sector funding. This is an independent piece of research.

Wavehill will delete the information you provide relating to this research within six months of the end of the research. This is expected to be in September 2023.

Further information

1. Why is this research happening?

Wavehill has been commissioned by BIC Innovation to undertake a research study of food and drink sector and the multiplier impact of the supply chain in Wales. BIC Innovation have been leading the SSU Cluster, a project to support food and drink businesses in Wales with business support expertise. As part of this work BIC have identified that more supply chains in Wales could benefit the industry. Further, there is no insight available on how much additional impact is generated by investment in the sector, and many of the outcomes from the SSU Cluster are increased finance and investment.

BIC are interested in exploring how food and drink companies in Wales are supplied, where value is added and what the multiplier effect is of any investment or spending in the supply chain.

2. What type of information is collected through the research?

Initial interviews focus on getting general information on the company, a description of the business supply chain and any investments that the company has made in recent years.

Additional information on the supply chain from each business is then captured through a spreadsheet. This includes contact information, location data (postcode) and commercial information including expenditure values.

3. What is personal data? What is commercial data?

Personal data means any information that could lead to a person being identified either alone or in combination with other widely-available information, e.g. their name, their address, or details specific to that person.

Commercial data includes any information which is not in the public domain and relates to the activities of a private company or organisation, e.g. organisation expenditure, holdings and legal information.

4. How long will personal/commercial data be kept for?

Wavehill will hold personal and commercial data during the contract period but will delete it six months after the end of the contract.

5. What is the legal basis for collecting and processing the data collected?

The research is being delivered based on the consent of participants. The processing of the data will allow Wavehill to present findings on the multiplier and supply chain in the Welsh food and drink sector to support BIC innovation in better understanding the economy. The outcomes may then be used to advocate for securing additional funding to support the development of the sector and supply chain, or help BIC Innovation to deliver services in response to the issues identified. This will support BIC Innovation in fulfilling their activities which are part publicly funded.

6. What is the purpose of processing your answers to the survey?

The data is used for research purposes only. The data will be analysed to enable Wavehill to present findings on the supply chain and help BIC Innovation better understand the food and drink sector. This will help BIC Innovation to decide whether to make any changes to their delivery programmes and encourage more funding to support the industry. The data will not be used for commercial or marketing purposes and it will not be used to take make decisions about you as an individual.

7. Who has access to the personal or commercial data collected?

Wavehill will have a copy of the commercial and personal data to allow it to carry out the research and analysis. Wavehill will make a written record of the discussion during any interviews and collate information shared in any spreadsheets. This information will be analysed by researchers at Wavehill to produce a report for BIC Innovation. This report will not identify any individuals or organisations participating in the research and will not disclose any of the commercial or personal information captured. All findings will be summed with others meaning that no figures will be presented that could lead to the identification of any particular organisation or individual. The notes and data will not be shared with BIC Innovation or anyone else outside of Wavehill. Wavehill will delete all personal data within six months of the end of the project.
